UEFA Conference League Semi-Final First Legs – Thursday, 30 April 2026

The 2025/26 UEFA Conference League semi-finals kicked off with two intriguing first-leg ties that delivered early drama, clinical finishing, and plenty of tension. Crystal Palace produced a stunning away performance to take a commanding lead, while Rayo Vallecano secured a narrow but vital home victory. Both results leave the ties wide open ahead of next week’s decisive second legs.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-3 Crystal Palace (Henryk Reyman Municipal Stadium, Kraków)

Crystal Palace delivered a statement performance in Poland, racing into an early lead and ultimately securing a commanding 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk despite playing away from home.

The Eagles took the lead in the 1st minute with the quickest goal in Conference League history. Ismaïla Sarr pounced on a defensive error and slotted home clinically, assisted by Jean-Philippe Mateta, to silence the home crowd and give Palace the perfect start.

Shakhtar fought back strongly after the break. In the 47th minute, Oleh Ocheretko equalised with a well-taken finish assisted by Kaua Elias, giving the Ukrainian side renewed hope.

However, Palace responded brilliantly. In the 58th minute, Daichi Kamada restored the lead with a composed strike, assisted by Ismaïla Sarr. The Japanese international’s goal proved crucial in maintaining momentum.

The final blow came in the 84th minute when Jørgen Strand Larsen sealed the 3-1 win with a clinical finish from the centre of the box, assisted by Daichi Kamada. Palace’s clinical finishing and defensive solidity in the second half proved decisive.

Tactical Analysis:

Palace manager Oliver Glasner set up his team to press high and exploit transitions, a plan that worked perfectly with Sarr’s lightning start. Shakhtar showed fight and creativity but were undone by defensive lapses and Palace’s superior finishing. The away performance from Palace was one of the most impressive of the entire campaign.

Rayo Vallecano 1-0 RC Strasbourg (Estadio de Vallecas, Madrid)

In a tight and competitive encounter at the iconic Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano earned a narrow 1-0 victory over French side Strasbourg thanks to a second-half header.

The only goal of the match arrived in the 54th minute. Alexandre Alemão (commonly known as Alemão) rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Isi Palazón, giving Rayo a slender but precious lead.

Strasbourg pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, creating several half-chances, but Rayo’s compact defence and goalkeeper’s heroics held firm. The Spanish side’s intensity and home support proved too much for the visitors on the night.

Tactical Analysis:

Rayo played with typical passion and physicality, controlling the game through midfield battles and quick switches. Strasbourg showed quality on the ball but lacked the final clinical touch. The single-goal margin keeps the tie alive, but Rayo now have the advantage of an away goal and a clean sheet to defend in France.

What These Results Mean for the Conference League Final

Both first-leg results have significantly shaped the path to the final but leave everything to play for.

•  Crystal Palace hold a strong 3-1 aggregate advantage over Shakhtar Donetsk and will be favourites to reach the final when the teams meet again at Selhurst Park on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

•  Rayo Vallecano take a narrow 1-0 lead into the second leg against Strasbourg, which will be played on the same night at the Stade de la Meinau.

The two winners will face each other in the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League Final on Wednesday, 27 May 2026 at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany.

Palace’s commanding first-leg win gives them a huge psychological and tactical edge, while Rayo’s clean-sheet victory keeps their dream of a first-ever European final very much alive. With only a one- or two-goal margin separating the teams, the second legs promise to be high-stakes, nerve-wracking affairs.

The 2025/26 Conference League has already produced plenty of surprises and drama — and with these semi-final results, the road to Leipzig is far from over.
