UEFA Europa League Semi-Final First Legs – Thursday, 30 April 2026

The 2025/26 UEFA Europa League semi-finals got underway with two captivating first-leg encounters that delivered drama, late goals and plenty of talking points. While no team has yet booked their ticket to the final, both ties are finely poised heading into next week’s second legs.

Braga 2-1 SC Freiburg (Estádio Municipal de Braga)

Sporting Braga produced a resilient and clinical performance to take a narrow advantage over German side SC Freiburg in front of a passionate home crowd.

The Portuguese side took the lead as early as the 8th minute when Demir Ege Tıknaz opened the scoring with a composed finish. Freiburg responded quickly, equalising in the 16th minute through captain Vincenzo Grifo, who found the net with a well-taken strike to restore parity.

The game remained balanced for long periods, with both teams creating chances. However, Braga showed greater composure in the closing stages. In the 90+2nd minute, Mario Dorgeles produced a dramatic late winner, slotting home from close range to send the home fans into delirium and give Braga a slender 2-1 lead to take to Germany for the second leg.

Tactical Analysis:

Braga’s high pressing and quick transitions caught Freiburg off guard early on. Freiburg dominated possession in spells but lacked the cutting edge to convert their pressure into more goals. The late winner highlighted Braga’s never-say-die attitude and set-piece threat, which will be crucial in the return fixture.

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Aston Villa (The City Ground)

In the all-English clash of the night, Nottingham Forest secured a narrow but vital victory over Premier League rivals Aston Villa in a tense and hard-fought encounter.

The decisive moment came in the 71st minute when Chris Wood coolly converted a penalty to give Forest a 1-0 lead. The goal came after a VAR review confirmed a foul inside the box, and Wood made no mistake from the spot.

Aston Villa created several opportunities throughout the match, particularly through Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, but were repeatedly denied by excellent goalkeeping and a resolute Forest defence. Unai Emery’s side struggled to break down Forest’s compact shape, and the home side’s counter-attacking threat proved decisive.

Tactical Analysis:

Forest played with typical intensity and organisation under their manager, soaking up pressure and hitting Villa on the break. The penalty decision shifted momentum decisively in Forest’s favour. Aston Villa showed flashes of quality but lacked the clinical edge in front of goal that has defined their European campaign so far. The result gives Forest a precious clean sheet and a narrow lead to defend at Villa Park next week.

What These Results Mean for the Europa League Final

Both first-leg results leave the semi-final ties wide open and highly competitive.

•  Braga vs Freiburg (2-1 first-leg advantage to Braga) will be decided in the second leg on Thursday, 7 May 2026 at the Europa-Park Stadion in Freiburg.

•  Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa (1-0 first-leg advantage to Forest) heads to Villa Park on the same night for what promises to be a fiery all-English second leg.

The winners of these two ties will meet in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League Final on Wednesday, 20 May 2026 at the Beşiktaş Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.

A single-goal margin in both ties means the second legs will be incredibly tense. Braga and Forest now have the psychological edge and the advantage of having scored away goals, but Freiburg and Aston Villa — both with strong home records — remain very much in contention. One mistake or moment of brilliance could swing the tie either way.

The road to Istanbul is far from over, but after these two entertaining first legs, the 2025/26 Europa League campaign is delivering exactly the drama European football fans crave.
